Protecting Facebook with HTTPS
With the release of security tool Firesheep and the defacement of Mark Zuckerberg facebook, the awareness of securing the web pages has become critically important. Password authentication is no longer enough to protect web accounts as they are sent clear text over the internet which can be hijack or viewed.
HTTPS, the S from the HTTPS is actually Secure Sockets Layer (SSL). Secure Sockets Layer, was developed by Netscape with the purpose of transmitting private documents via the Internet. SSL works via a cryptographic system which uses two keys to encrypt data – a public key known to everyone and a private or secret key known only to the recipient of the message. URLs that require an SSL connection start with HTTPS: instead of HTTP.

How HTTPS/SSL Works
To enable HTTPS on Facebook

Enable HTTPS on Facebook
1. Goto “Account Security” section of the Account Settings page.
2. Check on the option “Browse Facebook on a secure connection (https) whenever possible”
3. Click Save
Please take note that because of the process of encrytion, the page might take longer to load. Some application might not work proper as they are not coded to support SSL yet.
