Checking shutter count from Linux
Introduction :
Christmas came early this year 
finally after 2 years of procrastination … I got myself the DSLR I always wanted. I choose the Nikon D80 even though the D90 is already out because due to budget and I am new to all this and needless to pay for the extra Coolness (No offence guys!)
This was a used Nikon D80 and shutter counter was listed to be around 1070+, paranoid geek like me would definitely like to confirm this fact.

Installation and usage :
ExifTool is a platform-independent Perl library plus a command-line application for reading, writing and editing meta information in image, audio and video files. ExifTool supports many different types of metadata including EXIF, GPS, IPTC, XMP, JFIF, GeoTIFF, ICC Profile, Photoshop IRB, FlashPix, AFCP and ID3, as well as the maker notes of many digital cameras by Canon, Casio, FujiFilm, HP, JVC/Victor, Kodak, Leaf, Minolta/Konica-Minolta, Nikon, Olympus/Epson, Panasonic/Leica, Pentax/Asahi, Ricoh, Sanyo, Sigma/Foveon and Sony.
1. Download from the author webpage
2. Extract to a folder
3. Execute the ExifTool from a terminal
#./exiftool /path/to/the/photo/photo_name.jpg | grep -i “shutter count”
* We filtering the results for the particular “Shutter Count” or sometime known as “Actuations Count”
