4GB ram support for IBM ThinkCenter A51
Previous I purchase a IBM ThinkCenter A51. IBM ThinkCenter A51 model 8122 motherboard has 4 memory slots and each of them support 1GB. Other than egoistically wanted 4GB just to brag around, I also needed that much to do some virtualization testing at home. During the PC fair around December 2007, I went got myself 3GB of 667mhz DDR memory that worked.
PC2-5300 will slow down to match PC2-4200 or PC2-3700 as needed
Recently I got myself another 1GB memory, thinking that it will just work fine and I would have 4GB. Slotted in and booted up. Eh … how come it was still showing 3.02GB in my Ubuntu. I starting guessing it was the OS, but I’m using x64 of Ubuntu. Did an upgrade of the kernel to a server kernel that supported 64GB of memory. Even I do a dmidecode I can see the last slot with 1GB but just it won’t utilized it. I started googling and I found this on the online memory portal.
MODULES MAY BE INSTALLED ONE AT A TIME; however, they must be added in like pairs to take advantage of dual channel mode.
The BIOS addresses 4GB maximum, however, the system will only utilize 3GB.
The moral of the story is RTFM before even thinking of an upgrade !
